Improving Your Business’ Facebook Page

To put it bluntly, managing your business’ Facebook page can be frustrating. Many people will find themselves posting something and then sit there wondering where it all went wrong. “How can this be? I posted the exact same thing last week and had tons of likes!”. As much as you want to avoid it all together the unfortunate reality is that Facebook is still the world’s largest social media platform and an important cornerstone of your business’ online presence.

When I talk to clients about managing their social media presence I focus on a few main points: patience, data and work. Below are a few helpful tips on helping grow your social media presence and creating an engaged following.

Tip 1: Patience, Patience, Patience

Patience is important for all operations of your business but it is even more of a factor when it comes to social media. You can’t grow a Facebook following overnight (that is unless your main demographic is in Bangladesh). It takes time to grow an engaged audience, the same way it takes time to grow a customer base. That’s why it is important to keep your expectations realistic and work on growing your following organically. Post photos, graphics and videos that will be valued by your customers; give them a reason to engage and follow you. Use your other digital channels, such as your website and newsletter, to promote your Facebook page. Once you create a core following your page will have a greater reach and it will be easier to grow your audience.

Tip 2: The Answer Is In The Data

facebook_insights_overviewAs important as patience is, it pales in comparison to your Facebook page data. There are tons of websites out there that will tell you the perfect strategy for engaging Facebook audiences. “Post 1-3 times a day, alternating photos and links” or “Videos on Monday and Wednesday and tagged posts on Sunday”. The reality is that every page, every audience and every business is different. It takes trial and error to find what will work best for your audience. What makes Facebook one of the best social media platforms is that it provides you with very valuable and detailed data. Your Facebook Insights (found at the top of your Facebook page) tell you everything from customer reach to unique visitors, post engagement and demographic data. Take some time to understand how to use your Insights and review this information at least once a month. If you have questions about the performance of your Facebook page, the answer can almost always be found in the data.

Bonus Tip: Facebook Algorithms generally rank posts by relevance and then by live video, video, photos and finally links. This does not mean that a video will always out-perform a photo but it can help.

Tip 3: Put In The Hours

Your social media page is a valuable tool for growing your business and interacting with customers in unique ways. Thus, it requires you to put in the work to ensure its success. Before you jump into social media you should develop a social media strategy. What will you post? What is in your main message? How do you provide value for your customer? When answering these questions, you should think about how much time you will have each week to focus on social media and plan accordingly.
